"The years have added grain and intimacy to Baez's magisterial voice, especially on songs centred on retrospection, regret and mortality. She finds the tenderness beneath Tom Waits's gravel-voiced title track ("Can't stay here and I'm scared to leave") and Last Leaf, and the forgiveness in Mary Chapin Carpenter's The Things That We Are Made Of. The President Sang Amazing Grace, Zoe Mulford's account of the 2015 Charleston church shooting, hits a sweet spot, while the folk standard I Wish the Wars Were All Over concludes in simple, utopian style. A graceful bow-out".

"Another World' (Antony and the Johnsons) (...) er en mørk sang om fred, der giver [68'ernes] fortælling nyt liv, når hun synger om behovet for en bedre verden på denne måde: »I'm gonna miss the sea/I'm gonna miss the snow/I'm gonna miss the bees/I'll miss the things that grow«. Mens sangen er helt i hendes ånd, handler den også om en planet, vi igennem årtier har været i gang med at ødelægge ... Albummet er afdæmpet, produktionen varm og blød, og sangcyklussen udgør en afbalanceret helhed, der kredser om folkmusikken. Baez stemme i centrum er tydelig og intim ... "Joan's first studio collection since 2008's "Day After Tomorrow" could be seen as bringing her full circle in that it takes on board both the folky (or overtly folk-inspired) and the political or socially-conscious strands of writing ... The whole collection sounds tailor-made for Baez, and specific highlights come with Tim Eriksen's "I Wish The Wars Were All Over" and the disc's "significant discovery", the powerful "The President Sang Amazing Grace" by undersung singer-songwriter Zoë Mulford. Also most persuasive are "Civil War" (written by Joe Henry), Eliza Gilkyson's "The Great Correction", and the thoughtful political statement "Another World" (from the pen of Anohni, formerly Antony Hegarty) ... This is a fitting artistic statement for this stage of Joan's illustrious career, and one which may well constitute her final studio collection. If that's the case, then Joan will surely be going out on a high".
