"Bearing the weight of their combined musical heritage, the two singers have come out of the gate with a modern gem on their finely crafted album Fair Warning. While her brother Teddy Thompson has worked hard to forge a more contemporary musical path, Kami fully embraces the family tradition on alluring tracks like "Bonnie Portmore" and "William Taylor," where she and Walbourne weave their rich harmonies around classic English balladry. For his part, Walbourne seems equally at home leading the charge on more traditional fare like the bouncy, Celtic romp "Jealous Sailor" while flashing his substantial electric guitar chops on "Panic Attack Blues" and "Borstal." As singers, both he and Thompson each have a strong solo presence, but as the Rails, they are at their most effective, creating a truly classic blend on songs like the sublime country-folk closer "Habit"".

"Forty years ago, the (then) husband and wife team of Richard and Linda Thompson released one of the classic albums of British folk-rock, I Want to See the Bright Lights Tonight, on Island Records. Now their daughter Kami Thompson and her husband James Walbourne, aka the Rails, have their debut album released on the same label. It's a dangerous move, because comparisons become inevitable, but they get away with it. Kami is a fine, versatile singer with a style that at times echoes that of her mother, while Walbourne is an impressive guitarist who has played with Ray Davies and the Pogues".

"Kami is a fine, versatile singer with a style that at times echoes that of her mother, while Walbourne is an impressive guitarist who has played with Ray Davies and the Pogues. They are joined by Eliza Carthy on fiddle for a set that includes fine vocal duets on a gently exquisite 17th-century lament about the destruction of forests, a weepie country waltz and an upbeat folk-rocker about running from the police. A duo to watch".

"Steeped in timeless U.K. folk and rock traditions, London duo the Rails deliver a debut LP full of warmth and grace. Kami Thompson is the daughter of British folk-rock icons Richard & Linda Thompson and her musical partner and husband James Walbourne is a veteran solo artist and erstwhile guitarist for the Pretenders and the Pogues, among others. Bearing the weight of their combined musical heritage, the two singers have come out of the gate with a modern gem on their finely crafted album Fair Warning".

"A duo, which, inevitably, will see their debut album referenced to that of folk music legends Richard and Linda Thompson. It certainly doesn't suffer by comparison, although, unlike [Kami's] parents' recordings, it combines original material with arrangements of traditional tunes. Indeed, they kick off with the latter in the shape of the lilting, predominantly acoustic Bonnie Portmore, Kami taking lead with James providing harmonies and guitars. It's a perfectly straightforward reading, whereas murder ballad William Taylor, on which they share vocals, takes a more electric approach that may remind some of a lighter touch early Steeleye Span ... Across the course of six albums, Richard and Linda Thompson established themselves as enduring British folk rock legends. Island having resurrected their classic 60s pink label just for them, daughter and son-in-law seem highly likely to follow in their footsteps".

"Let's face it, "folk rock" and "Americana" ... I mean, if Richard & Linda Thompson were to reappear with a great follow-up to Shoot Out The Lights, or it turned out that Gram Parsons and Emmylou Harris had left another killer in the can after Grievous Angel, you might get a bit excited, but really... So I wasn't expecting an album that's as good as either of those two impossible instances might be, and possibly better than anything branded Fairport or Albion since the 1970s. And it does so without breaking a single mould, staying absolutely true to those genres' traditions whilst coming up as fresh as a daisy ... [The Rails] are none other than Kami Thompson - daughter of Linda and Richard - and her guitarist partner James Walbourne (Pretenders, Pogues, Ray Davies), who's not averse to channelling a bit of trademark RT twang either. And to add a bit more first families spice, that Eliza Carthy is a-fiddling all over it ... Their music may be working firmly in a coupleoftraditions that coalesced in their recognisable forms less than half a century ago but it's natural and well-rooted ... Winner!".
