"The programme ranges widely - 19th-century Lieder, Jake Heggie, Poulenc, Marlene Dietrich being Just a Gigolo ... It's the gentler, airier numbers that show Appl at his considerable best, sustaining intensity even when spinning the tiniest thread of sound, his voice all velvet smoothness ... Baillieu's responsive, detailed piano playing supports him at every turn in bringing these songs to life ".

"Recommended: Appl takes us back to the Garden of Eden and the creation of Adam and Eve ... Eve ate the forbidden fruit, and "from then on, the forbidden fruit has become associated with desire" ... Appl has chosen a good two-dozen songs from various times and genres to illustrate that desire, interspersed with quotations from the bible. As beginning and end, James Baillieu plays Fauré's In Paradisum from Requiem, originally a choral piece, but here transcribed for piano. Of the songs, many are by established, well-known composers, though not always those most frequently heard ... Appl handles the various genres and styles with unerring feeling and taste and ennobles the more lightweight repertoire without condescension. Vocally, he encompasses all the technical demands and the beauty of tone as well as the dramatic requirements. Besides this, the choice of songs is discriminatingly sensitive. There is not a weak link here and the sum of the parts is even greater than the individual songs. To follow this programme, texts in hand, has been an uplifting experience, and I recommend that you make the same journey".

"Editor's choice - June 2023: This eclectic and imaginative recital of songs exploring the ideas of temptation and taboo is probably the German baritone's finest recording to date. It's great to hear him letting his hair down in songs like Poulenc's 'Couplets bachiques' and a delicious number from Schoenberg's Brettl-Lieder, with other highlights including a particularly biting 'Heidenröslein' and a wistful, melancholy take on the popular torch-song 'Just a Gigolo'".

"The baritone's latest album harvests a rich crop of forbidden fruit in an exuberant exploration of desire and temptation, indulgence and transgression. The sheer breadth and ingenuity of the programming is, well - irresistible. Its execution is just as persuasive ... Forbidden, yet seldom forbidding, Appl's exquisitely cultivated fruits are ripe for plucking, and deserve to be consumed with unalloyed relish!".

"Travelling across eras and genres, this is a diffuse collection capturing the erotic, the innocent and the corrupted. It works because of the intimacy of the performers (in a warmly confiding acoustic) and the palpable sense that the pair are in sync ... It's all delivered with wit, intelligence and sophistication, and the thematic joins don't feel forced despite the breadth of the material".
