"Six of the 12 songs on the First Lady of Gospel's Good God were written by Kurt Carr, while two others were co-written by James Fortune. Despite these collaborations, Good God is very much a Shirley Caesar album, more traditional in approach than recent releases from either one of her younger associates ... The album's overriding theme is one of taking action. It's hard to imagine a motivator more powerful than Caesar".

"'Good God's title track and nine other songs reunite her with the Thompson Community Singers, the powerhouse Chicago choir with which she frequently recorded in the '70s, '80s and '90s ... The rhythm section, anchored by bassist Simon Baker and drummer Terry Baker, is alive and kicking, lifting Caesar and the choir to one peak of spirit-filled inspiration after another".
