"Tribute to 2 has no single artist focus - it's comprised of covers James' cut over several years in different studios ... Ultimately, Tribute to 2 is uneven and fuzzy. When it works, it's lovely; when it doesn't, it's a head-scratcher. This is for fans only".

"When the My Morning Jacket singer elects to record a compilation of songs mostly from the 1960s and 1970s in 2017, what stands out, aside from his interpretive choices, is primarily the question of differing vantage. How do the sentiments of the Beach Boys or Sonny and Cher sound in the 21st century compared to the 20th? What new riches of meaning might Willie Nelson gain? ... The language here is identical to the the source material. But in James' hands, in times like these, the covers can't help but sound different".

"Cosmic rockers My Morning Jacket aren't the force of old but, as this album of cover versions shows, their frontman's voice remains a potent instrument ... Occasionally, particularly on the standards, he tries too hard to make the track his own, adding unnecessary howls and flourishes. For the most part, though, these spare reworkings are dramatic and wonderfully arranged".
