"Reich'n'roll red herring resurrected ... If krautrock was a means by which Germany's youth sought to separate itself from its country's recent shameful past, then these Dusseldorf dudes totally fumbled the history ball with their self-released debut LP from 1972. Or rather they were hoodwinked by their maverick producer/entrepreneur/occasional organist, the enigmatic Manfred 'Warlock' Uhr ... Down In The Bunker's atavistic spirit might have lived on through superior Japanese bands such as White Heaven, Mainliner and High Rise, but the myth surrounding their debut has for too long overshadowed its musical merits, thanks in large part to its obscurity and the booster antics of one Julian Cope. This reissue should encourage a more sober appraisal".
