"Even when he stretched out beyond the pop radio format, as on Truelove's Gutter, his songwriting has never strayed from the point. The same can certainly be said of Further, which clocks in at a concise 35 minutes and acts as something of a primer for Hawley's wider solo career. Opener Off My Mind reasserts his down'n'dirty rawk credentials while My Little Treasures is one of those gently creeping Hawley melodies that find themselves worming into your consciousness before you've realised. His gifts are to create narratives without being hokey about it; to draw upon the history of songcraft without falling into pastiche. Further may not take Hawley anywhere new, but it succeeds in drawing you back into his world. Not a bad place to be".

"In the album's 40 minutes, there is scarcely any flab. Twenty years into his solo career, Hawley certainly isn't tearing up the blueprint, but within the boundaries of his domain, nobody does it better".
