"Following the breakout success of their eponymous debut album, Thee Sacred Souls cemented their following by touring across Europe and the United States numerous times, offering their brand of rootsy retro and Latin soul to growing audiences ... They matured as a unit and developed into one of the tightest trios in pop or R&B ... 'Got a Story to Tell' offers 12 original songs that expand the outfit's emotional and musical reach (...), [with] songwriting influenced by the Motown and Brill Building traditions ... "My Heart Is Drowning" melds polished Motown soul-pop and rocksteady reggae in a startling mix that juxtaposes Lane's soaring falsetto with his backing chorus in a plea for love and understanding. It's the album's finest track. In sum, 'Got a Story to Tell' is a masterpiece of growth, musical integration, and unvarnished emotional truth".

"[Thee Sacred Souls] display a remarkably natural feel for the nuances of the genre on their second LP, stripping back the arrangements to the essentials: melodic basslines, behind.the-beat drums, tasty keyboard and guitar textures and the judicious use of space. These elements combine with the elevated songcraft on gems including "Lucid Girl", on which [Josh] Lane channels Curtis Mayfield, and "Live For You", which captures the gossamer uplift of Marvin Gaye's 'What's Going On' studio band".

"With their resonant second album, the San Diego three-piece (...) reimagine that late-'60s/early-'70s period at Motown and Philly Groove when singers with gossamer-light tenors and falsettos crooned and wailed and pleaded over palatially arranged backgrounds ... It's delivered with preternatural precision, the group's songs about love, lust and longing vibrating with grandeur while tapping into the same emotional drama as The Delfonics et al.".
