"Buying time while he's squirreled away in the studio working on his major-label debut with Jon Brion, Billy Strings released 'Live, Vol. 1', a double-LP culled from shows recorded between April 2023 and March 2024. "Dust in a Baggie" gets things off to a brisk start but don't worry, Strings takes more than enough time to jam. "Fire Line>Reuben's Train" and "Turmoil & Tinfoil" hover around the 20-minute mark, the closing "Highway Hypnosis" stretches out to nearly 16 minutes ... Those extended improvisations are where the pleasure of Live, Vol. 1 lies: It's all about the journey, not the destination".

"Billy Strings is a remarkable talent that continually reaches more listeners outside of the bluegrass spectrum. 'Live Vol. 1' does a marvelous job answering the question of how he's managed to maintain such a wide appeal. This is one of those recordings that display Strings' abilities in a way that none of his previous studio efforts ever have".

"Strings fans (...) don't expect the tunes he does live to sound like they do on his records, and he doesn't disappoint. Strings' solos go anywhere he feels in the moment, but always seem to land in the right place".

"If Billy Strings' 'Live Vol. 1' is any indication, this series has genuine potential to develop into a genre-defining compilation, similar to the Grateful Dead's 'Dick's Picks' and Phish's 'LivePhish' archival releases. And while fans are most certainly hoping that any future live albums are released in a more expeditious manner, it's very safe to say that the end result will be well worth the wait.".
