"Santigold's latest album is a lockdown project created in an attempt to return to her normal self after the pandemic. Although it's been 14 years since her genre-bending, self-titled debut was met with praise and awe, time hasn't affected the singer-songwriter's ability to create rich, textured pop that reverberates beyond the dancefloor. Spirituals is short, only 10 songs, but it's a winding journey through a landscape of loneliness, triumph and rage, inspired by African American folk song ... This whirlwind album is full of feeling and fervour, and its liveliness affirms just why she is a singular talent".

"Santigold certainly acts as a spiritual guide here, steering us from angst toward a collective out-of-body release. As is the case when someone is pioneering an innovative soundscape, the journey sometimes faces some obstacles - Spirituals is peppered with clunky, too-literal lyrics that disrupt the spell cast by the music's emotion. But by the end, we get a glimpse of the next phase of Santigold's artistry-a project not bound by genre, form, physicality, or language".

"Motherhood, writer's block, and the COVID-19 global pandemic all contributed to Santi White taking a longer hiatus from music than she expected. Spirituals, her fourth album as Santigold, also upends expectations. Instead of the playful cultural critique of 99 Cents or the sunny vibes of I Don't Want: The Gold Fire Sessions, this time Santigold offers music made in and for difficult times. She brings her focus inward, crafting hypnotic, often moody songs about building and showing resilience; as always, they're expertly crafted, with ear-catching production choices aplenty ... Spirituals pushes Santigold's music forward while shoring up its strengths - and for perhaps the first time since her debut, it feels like art that she had to make for herself".

"Shape-shifting Santi White's fourth studio album is an eclectic and mostly alluring affair. Her first full release since the dancehall-inspired 2018 mixtape 'I Don't Want: The Gold Fire Sessions' retains some of the same Caribbean flavour on tracks like eerily beautiful helium-voiced opener "My Horror", synth-funk bouncer "High Priestess" and the Cyndi Lauper-ish "Ushers Of The New World". Auto-tuned electro-soul, reggae-lite rhythms and deceptively political lyrics are key motifs here, although Nick Zinner of Yeah Yeah Yeahs lends som grungey thrust to "Fall First"".
