"So whether one is attracted to either or both Franck's Piano Quintet in D major and quartet may be a matter of taste, but these are seminally important late romantic works, and the performance they get from these dedicated and skilled players commends itself. Naxos' recording is a little quiet, but is clear and well-balanced".

"If you are only ever going to have one recording of each of the three major chamber works by César Franck the String Quartet, the Violin Sonata, and the Piano Quintet these recordings by the Quatuor Ysa with pianist Pascal Rogé are the ones to have ... the Quatuor Ysa is arguably the finest of the current crop of French quartets, and their purity, intensity, sensuality, and ensemble virtuosity makes them the ideal interpreters of Franck's music".

"Franck wrote his String Quartet in 1890 ... I am not all that familiar with this piece but I was highly impressed with this performance from the Quatuor Danel ... The Quatuor Danel navigate their way brilliantly through this complex web before drawing the work to its triumphant conclusion ... The F minor Piano Quintet is performed more regularly ... This performance from the Quatuor Danel and Paavali Jumppanen is very good indeed ... The towering performance by Richter and the Borodin Quartet is still the best interpretation of this work, but this new recording contains very fine playing and is a substantial addition to the discography. Highly recommended".

"Meaty playing that brings out the angst in these knotty, chromatic works. The Quartet's Larghetto has an expansive feel while the Quintet's finale has a devilish abandon".

"The Dante Quartet are superb advocates, especially in the Franck, where they are without peer among modern accounts ... A touch more light and shade would be welcome, especially in the genial final movement, but this is still an enjoyable performance".

"Editor's choice: These performances by the Quatuor Danel are deftly poised on a knife's edge between sensuousness and rigour, as the most memorable interpretations of Franck's music so often are ... It's the vivid characterisations that makes these performances extraordinary ... This new recording by the Quatuor Danel and Paavali Jumppanen is the most gripping yet - and by a long shot. Urgently recommended".

"Two swansongs, and in each case it's the composer's only string quartet ... This is a notably well recorded disc ... from the opening bars of the Franck we feel the intensity of the Dante's commitment ... It's certainly playing of great accomplishment".

"Here's an enticing assemblage of Francks three greatest chamber works, all splendidly recorded and offering stylish, powerfully communicative performances ... And in all three works, the musicians command all the flexibility this highly expressive music needs, alongside the subtlety and discipline that leaves us feeling were hearing the music rather than just one interpretation of it".
