"The playing of the Bergen Philharmonic is crisp and powerful as required ... Järvi always chooses apt tempi and he really has the music of Act 2 swinging along beautifully ... The luxury casting of James Ehnes pays off with the absolute security and purity of sound of his playing in the Danse Russe ... This is another first class ballet release".

"Jurowski's finely-tuned ear and his sense of detail coupled with an urgency to his music-making comes through in spades here. Each movement holds its own character, but there is also a palpable feeling that Jurowski is working on the large-scale, too ... Superb individual contributions (oboe, cello, trumpet in particular) are the icing on the cake. Two super-long SACDs, superbly recorded with radiant playing make this a must".

"Jurowski lacks nothing in terms of passionate commitment - the impact of his recording, especially when the SACD surround-track is activated, is all-engulfing - and conjures up a compelling emotional narrative".

"Vurdering: BBC music orchestral choice" - ""[Ehnes] is superb throughout ... The Bergen Philharmonic offers the most polished playing, driven by Järvi at often faster than usual tempos ... When it matters Järvi abandons his brisk manner for an understated yet manifest sensitivity to Tchaikovsky's poignant lyricism".

"The Russian National Orchestra's sound has certainly improved over the years, especially in the woodwind department; but the strings in full lack the body one expects from a Slavic ensemble".

"To be of more than archive interest, Gergiev should have opened up all the cuts (if not all the repeats) and provided a half-hour supplement of the missing music".

"Editor's choice: This is a terrific new account. Jurowski's 'Svetlanov' Orchestra - basically the old USSR State Symphony - really has this music coursing through its veins. The orchestra still has a distinctly Russian flavour, even if the paint-stripper brass and acidic oboe of yore have been polished up. The strings are sumptuously rich, while the woodwinds are superb ... Järvi just about holds the palm, but make no mistake: Jurowski's Swan Lake is up there with the very best".

"Järvi ensures each individual scene or dance offers excitement, emotion and character and the Chandos sound has splendid depth and impact. All initially impressive, but the scenario quickly palls as prgression offers no substitute for development ... Despite impressive playing from the Bergen orchestra and stylish solo violin contributions from James Ehnes, much of the music rings hollow and frustratingly misconceived".

"Pletnev turns Tchaikovsky's great ballet into a driving orchestral showpiece ... There is some beautiful individual playing ... The introduction is beautifully atmospheric".

"The performance is just as disappointing as the choice of edition ... Whatever your current favourite, you can rest assured that this new recording is no replacement".
