"'The Forest Is the Path' does manage to pick itself up somewhat as it digs into its second half, even if it's too little too late. "Years That Fall" incorporates a tasteful electronic glisten and some drive, powered by a deep seated, weary heartbreak aged over "the years that fall between us." The following "Never Really Tire" is even stronger, one of the few moments that actually warrants the full Snow Patrol treatment with an ominous build and, finally, an epic climax that earns its monumental paintings of a collapsing landscape ... [It] would have been far more effective as a Gary Lightbody solo record. It's too often drowned in uninspired instrumentals, but just beneath the surface there is a damaged and beautiful writer calling on decades of craft to find his truest voice".
