"Pladen emmer (...) af, at der har været de helt rigtige vibrationer, ligesom Ibrahim [Ag Alhabib] synes tilbage ved styrepinden, og så er alt godt ... Det er et fund at have Warren Ellis, som normalt spiller med Nick Cave & The Bad Seeds, på violin, for pludselig får musikken igen noget af den tidløse rum-kvalitet, som var Brian Eno og Daniel Lanois inde over, mens kvindekorene med knæk i stemmerne på tamashek er Tinariwen, når de er bedst. Det klæder dem også at have taget turen til Mauritanien, hvor Noura Mint Seymali og hendes guitarist, Jeiche Ould Chighaly, med deres mauriske version af Sahara-musikken giver det elektriske band nogle af de rødder, man nogle gange savner".

"Ørkenrockstjernerne Tinariwen har udgivet deres niende album, og det er endnu et smukt, sandblæst værk. Men det er også ganske særligt. For det fanger bedre end nogensinde ørkenen og kollektivismen i sit udtryk ... Tinariwen har været afgørende budbringere af ørkenrocken - en elektrisk blanding af blues og lokale traditioner - til den vestlige verden ... Sangene på Amadjar er sindigt rundtossede, lunt melodiske. De er bumlende og alligevel hallucinatoriske i deres rytmik ... [Sangene] indspilles live, og det sker uden brug af hovedtelefoner og effekter ... resultatet er forunderligt. Der er en kompakt bomstærk helhed og alligevel en gennemsigtighed i lydbillederne. Der er en forunderlig kompleksitet og balance i mixet af traditionelle instrumenter, elguitar, kor".

"Top of the world" - "To record Amadjar [Tinariwen] returned to the desert, working up their new songs under the Saharan stars on a 12-day journey across Morocco and Mauritania and then recording them in a large tent pitched near Nouakchott. There they were joined by Noura Mint Seymali and her guitarist husband Jeiche Ould Chigaly and additional instrumentation was later overdubbed by a bunch of Western indie rockers. The outside contributions are valuable, particularly the droning violin of the Bad Seeds' Warren Ellis on 'Tenere Maloulat', and the mandolin of Micah Nelson from Neil Young's band adds a sparkling texture to 'Anina'. But it is essentially ornamentation, for at the core of the record is the soul and dignity of Tinariwen, restored to their natural milieu and back to their best, from the intense blues-rock of 'Zawal' to the more playful rhythms of 'Taqkal Tarha' via the timeless acoustic majesty of the closing track 'Lalla'".
