"This set is well worth hearing but it has its problems and it could never be seen as the Rheingold for a collection. Gergiev holds one's attention and the orchestra are lovely to listen to. The recording favours the orchestra over the singers so perhaps that is the reason".

"After such an excellent Walküre as the one they released earlier in 2013, this Rheingold is nowhere near the top flight ... René Pape whose Wotan was so impressive in Walküre, and it remains so here. His opening peroration to the finished castle is superb, full of hope, nobility and high-minded aspiration ... Much of what is on offer elsewhere, however, is distinctly mediocre".

"My reservations mustn't be exaggerated and won't affect everyone. They didn't prevent me enjoying this enormously, not least in its airy freedom".

"Naxos presents Jaap van Zweden and the Hong Kong Philharmonic in their first ever Ring, rarely the best idea. However, the cast is compensatingly strong, even stellar ... Van Zweden conducts with an easy sweep".

Man indfanges.

"His conducting is fast, as Wagner preferred and intensely dynamic but he avoids Boulez's glibness, illuminating the drama of the moment in a mercurial, almost Solti-like fashion ... He seems to have encouraged his singers to act - with a vengeance ... For sheer dramatic dash and glowing orchestral sound this is remarkable, promising an exciting Ring to come".

"This is superbly recorded, mainly wonderfully played , interestingly conducted and reasonably well sung ... Dramatically gripping as only a well-conducted Rheingold can be ... The best reason for getting this set is the Loge of Christian Elsner ... Elsner does not miss a trick in catching all the elements of this complex character, but he never sings less than beautifully".

"Despite some fine singing, this is not a first - or second - choice for Rheingold on CD. Still leading the field, 55 years after it was recorded, is Solti's performance on Decca".

""[Pape's] superbly well-sung performance is far from monotonously dignified ... There are no weak links in this cast: Fricka, Loge, Fasolt and Fafner are all as good as any of the recently recorded rivals you might care to name ... The uniquely euphoric spirit of The Ring's prelude emerges with irresistable conviction as the compelling drama unfolds".

"The Hong Kong Philharmonic sound fully up for the occasion and have the stamina for this demanding piece ... Matthias Goerne sings Wotan beautifully with much baritonal sophistication, predictable care for words and able negotiation of trickier moments ... Peter Sidhom enjoys himself greatly playing Alberich as an out-and-out 'baddie' ... [The scene in Nibelheim] feels as if David Cangelosi's Mime, both funny and moving with any kind of braying excess, has acted as a catalyst to turn the occasion into a more full-on dramatic performance".

"Vurdering: Editor's choice" - "The Bavarians are in tune with the approach ... Rattle's cast ... tends now to feature strong vocal actors evidently encouraged by their maestro ... The sound ... is crystal clear, the balance of voices almost ideal ... Hugely recommended".

"It's the RSOB's playing that steps effortlessly into the limelight. This is a Ring conceived, deliberately, as a musical rather than a theatrical journey ... [Schmeckenberger's is] a characterization of awesome dramatic power ... After Schmeckenberger, another star of the set is the lyrical, immaculately articulated Loge of Christian Elsner ... Janowski's masterly architechtural grasp of the score and the beautiful detail and thrilling power he entices from the orchestra".

"Those with open ears to the characterisation of this opera should be as pleased as they were with Janowski's casting of the predecessors in Pentatone's 'mature' Wagner cycle. Konieczny is a gone-up Alberich ... Schmeckenbecker is a flexible Alberich, dark enough to rob the world of love ... But the real secret ingredient here is the conductor himself ... This is both a great start to Janowski's new Ring cycle and a competitive Rheingold in its own right".
