"Outside Denmark, this opera was virtually unknown, not least because of language barriers, which is certainly a pity, for musically it is truly a masterpiece of the romantic genre, colorful, dramatic, with beautiful arias, magnificent ensemble and choral scenes, and folkloric dance interludes. One is reminded of Weber and of Beethoven's Fidelio, but without that calling into question Heise's originality ... The cast in this live recorded performance is excellent. Danish tenor Peter Lohdal succeeds in a strong characterization of King Erik ... The female lead, that of the seduced Lady Ingeborg, is sung emotionally and passionately dramatically by soprano Sine Bundgaard ... The chorus and orchestra of the Danish National Opera are in great shape and are spurred on to gripping music-making by the committed conductor Schönwandt. Consequently, this is a most interesting recording that will please anyone who loves romantic opera".
