"Ilchi, the leader, played in a Beijing punk band before hearing overtone singing ad going back to his father's homeland to learn the techniques. In Hohhot (the capital of Inner Mongolia) he met the young morin khuur (horse head fiddle) players/singers Hugejiltu and Bagen and these three form the group's core ... The sound varies from the full-throated Mongolian roar of Ilchi's vocals and morin khuur to the trotting rhythms of the grasslands and to more melodic pieces ... Hanggai are a particularly exciting prospect".
