"Haiku-like in so many ways, 'Silent, Listening' brings Hersch's singular conceit, the insistence that the stated melody be at the heart of his calligraphic touch, to the dazzling fore".

"As you would probably expect, pianist Fred Hersch's first solo album for ECM (...) is a quiet triumph. Following his recent duo recording for the label with trumpeter Enrico Rava, 'The Song is You', and using the same Lugano studio and piano, Hersch has chosen a repertoire of often experimental, extempore-sounding originals mixed with a few very carefully chosen standards ... The overall mood - and there is a mood, corresponding to what Hersch called the "nocturnal" atmosphere of the album - is one of gentle and delicate yet free and spontaneous probing of the piano's potential".

"While Silent, Listening might seem to veer too far into softness and space, it is ultimately through the restraint of his sparse phrasing that Hersch attunes our ears to his emotive message, as pervasive as it is ambiguous".
