"Despite his earlier songs being served with 60s-style orchestration, Lightfoot's songs have stood the test of time, including Affair On 8th Avenue, which transports English folk themes to New York City, the real-life tragedy-inspired The Wreck Of The Edmund Fitzgerald and I'm Not Sayin' (which provided 1965's memorable debut single for Nico). All told, it's a musical heritage well worth investigating and celebrating".

"One could quibble with the song selection ("Black Day in July" is missing, for instance) and the relatively light attention to his 1960s work (which is limited to disc one); an opportunity was also missed to include a rarity by excluding his mid-'60s single of Bob Dylan's "Just Like Tom Thumb Blues." But generally it's a representative sampling of his most meaningful, or commercially successful, recordings".
