Mr og Mrs Bennet har 5 smukke døtre der gerne skulle giftes med rige mænd, da fætteren Collins er indsat som arving af deres herregård. Da den unge, rige Mr Bingley flytter til egnen og får et godt øje til Jane Bennet synes lykken gjort. Den næstældste datter Elizabeth møder Bingley's rige ven den arrogante Darcy, men Elizabeth vil kun giftes af kærlighed.
