"Coming off his expansive, Grammy-nominated 2018 studio album Hollywood Africans, Jon Batiste offers the more intimate and swinging Anatomy of Angels: Live at the Village Vanguard ... While Batiste has long been recognized for his charisma and cross-pollinated sound, with Anatomy of Angels he spotlights his richly textured jazz chops".

"Batiste never has the blues far from his fingers, and gives a rich solo intro to the luscious trio piece "Dusk Train To Doha" before he is rich and patient on an emotive duet with earth toned vocalist Rachael Price on a passionate and personal "The Very Thought Of You." Batiste's wide palate is further explored as his larger ensemble mixes modal moods alongside Crescent City pulses on the opus of a title track, with a mix of searing saxes taking the baton from Batiste's explorations. One night with Batiste would not have captured all of his colors; this disc does the trick".

" Each of the pianist's three originals here are (...) mercurial and improvisatory in feel, erudite and complex in execution ... Recorded at the Village Vanguard, the album captured only a fraction of Batiste's residency last fall. But two standards made the cut, including "Round Midnight." It starts as a stealthy reveal of angular hidden corners and morphs into a heavy swing, before slipping into a subtle rhumba. A lone trumpet propels the tune-a musical allusion, perhaps, to Gabriel, the archangel, announcing the approach of divinity".
