"The title piece is a suite made up of five short, medium, and long parts. Smith plays percussion in addition to trumpet. Over its 25-minute length, Smith uses jazz history, quoting from Monk's "'Round Midnight" and Miles' "Milestones" and other jazz standards, while stretching their language to where it breaks and becomes one of his own invention".

"Ancestors was recorded in Finland with the South African drummer Louis Moholo-Moholo. It is the latest in Smith's series of duo recordings with the drummer ... There is no better place to hear his subtle shadings of feeling and sound than in this stripped-down setting".
