"If you know George Miller primarily as the shock-comedy expert who helped make Baauer's "Harlem Shake" go viral with a series of puerile hip thrusts in 2013, his new album under the name Joji might be evidence of one of the greatest transformations in modern pop culture. Ballads 1 is elegiac and prettily pout-faced; Miller used to make you cringe, Joji makes you cry".

"Through his first record in this latest project of his, he shows how well he can his voice heard in a serious hip hop setting. This said, enough of the album feels reliant on known quantities in the genre that it can feel a little done at times ... Joji bounces his vocals through the fun syncopation of "XNXX" however to close the album on a hopeful note. Though it's not quite revolutionary, there's definitely a strong enough personality to let this complete the record without feeling trite".

"George Miller's nearly seven years of trolling the internet as the equal parts viral and vile YouTube personas Filthy Frank and Pink Guy were accented by his quiet SoundCloud releases as Joji ... Now, with all the shiny trappings of a label and a fanbase hungry for self-deprecating zingers like "Yeah Right" rather than Pink Guy's stir fry raps, his first full-length project BALLADS 1 makes an effort to push past the confines of his bedroom walls and tedious heartache".
