"It's exhilarating to hear Berlin back and alive, but then again, it was more exhilarating to see it back and alive: an option now available to whoever cares to pick up Schnabel's DVD. It's a miracle Reed was able to turn one of the most hermetic albums of all time into a communal experience, but Live at St. Ann's was also a one-time-only slight of hand: Berlin will forever be a record best enjoyed alone".

"This live recording seems to trade a roughly equal number of new flaws for those of the original album, but this performance sounds like a legitimate attempt by Reed to revisit his past without being shackled to it, and on that level it's a brave and compelling experiment that (often) works".

"At the time of its release, fans and critics had been expecting something else like its predecessor - upbeat, catchy, groovy. What they got was a package of ten spiteful, depressing tracks about poverty, drug abuse and suicide. Suffice to say, it flopped ... In retrospect, Berlin is among Reed's finest solo works".

"It's hard not to be impressed by Berlin, given the sheer scope of the project, but while it earns an A for effort, the actual execution merits more of a B-".

"While it lacks the clinical studio intensity of the original, this live performance carves its own muscular drama and dark poetry out of Reed's dystopian lyrics and coruscating music, the latter helped by the return of original collaborator Steve Hunter on electric guitar. Reed himself remains his timeless self: dour, po-faced, emotionally underplayed and vocally colourless but acutely acerbic and astringent".

"... doom and gloom aside, musically Berlin is brave, adventurous and keeps on surprising you ... Just dont expect to be cheered up".
