"The one downside with Candlepower is that it is far too short - you want to watch the candle burn right down, and we only get a flicker. What we do hear, however, is tantalising and an ode to reinvention. "Don't you wanna drive around with me?/Listening to Hejira through a blown-out freedom scheme?" Allen questions, seeming full of wonder. And it's true. We do".

"A singer/songwriter in the classic '70s tradition who looks to the sophisticated, folk-inflected pop of artists like Carole King, Laura Nyro, and especially Joni Mitchell, Marina Allen signed with Fire Records before releasing her first recordings in early 2021. The Angeleno's debut album, Candlepower, follows a few months later and offers an efficient, seven-track introduction to her work, which, while varied, never strays far from her influences".

"Artist of the month" - "It's tempting, when a new act emerges, to identify and compare them by what has gone before, and there are certainly several names and influences bundled around Marina Allen. Echoes of the great female singer-songwriters, such as Joni Mitchell, Carole King, Laura Nyro and Karen Carpenter, alongside more recent voices such as Laura Marling feature throughout Candlepower, but there is so much more to Allen than an easy replication of the past. This talented singer-songwriter is certainly her own star, enthused rather than burdened by such comparisons ... Candlepower is an effortlessly crafted, and luxurious, listen. Charming and challenging in equal measures it is a thoroughly beguiling debut and proves Marina Allen to be a very welcome voice we are guaranteed to hear much of in the future. Allen's dreamy, timeless voice will lure and bewitch you. You will go willingly".
