"Villages takes their devotion to a folkish noir quite seriously, drawing on its evocative imagery and a sound spawned from idealism and imagination. Like their fellow travelers Fleet Foxes, Watchhouse, Hiss Golden Messenger and Blitzen Trapper, they're unafraid of bending a few boundaries in order to fully explore the depths and textures that might otherwise remain obscured ... Ultimately, Dark Island offers nothing less than a true communal embrace".

"The band's move into their own take on Celtic-inspired indie rock is still relatively recent but you can feel their enthusiasm and energy across every song. Minor quibbles aside, this is a fine album featuring an outstanding singer and you could bet good money on Villages being a great live band".

"In essence, a musical love letter to Cape Breton in all its wild beauty that really should have had the Nova Scotia tourist board falling over themselves to sponsor".
