"It's not as glitzy and bombastic as other modern blues, because it leans heavily on older traditions that have been largely ignored in recent years. That is unfortunate, because the album is a winner on many levels. Nuance, authenticity, and emotive playing factor into every track of the set. If not for the fertile mind and practiced hands of Kroha, the concept might not have worked so well. For those willing to listen attentively, they will find a modern blues gem that has both feet firmly in the past and in the present. It is a masterful feat, and Detroit Blues might be Danny Kroha's best work to date".

"Kroha's take on folk-blues numbers like "Oh Death" and "Leavin' Blues" feel like substantial evolutions from their original versions, and throughout Detroit Blues he refreshes material that is, in some cases, nearly a century old with a patchwork of captivating revisions and reconsiderations. It's another unsurprisingly fantastic chapter of Kroha's discography, one where his inventive spirit expands on the possibilities of traditional songs until they become something new and all his own".

"The wonder in the songs for the listener is the opportunity to delve back and discover the original versions, often hiss and static-laced live recordings. Kroha's reinterpretations, such as on his rendition of Georgia Turner's House Of The Rising Sun, allow the songs to shine once more. The album is perfect for blues, folk and gospel aficionados, further versions in the ever-expanding canon, as well as those seeking to explore the genres more".
