"British Indian vocalist Najma Akhtar's innovative approach in fusing Ghazal - the traditional Urdu style of musical poetry - with Western elements began with her second album, 'Qareeb' (1989) ... Here, she explores songs by the likes of Love and Tim Hardin, chosen to mirror Ghazal's central theme of unrequited love, over an organic musical backdrop blending rock, blues, folk, and psychedelia with Indian and West African sounds. Highlights are frequent, and include a breathtaking "Black Is The Colour Of My True Love's Hair" featuring a flowing, nuanced vocal performance reminiscent of Jeff Buckley".
