"While not all of Folkocracy is memorable, successful experiments and moving performances outnumber the more routine, and it closes on another highlight, a reverent "Wild Mountain Thyme" featuring Rufus, his sister Lucy Wainwright Roche, aunt Anna McGarrigle, cousin Lily Lanken, and Chaim Tannenbaum (Rufus' sister Martha appears elsewhere on the album). His mother, Kate McGarrigle, is also represented; Tannenbaum plays her banjo on the track".

"Sammen med sublime samarbejdspartnere serverer Rufus Wainwright himmerigsmundfulde på stribe ... Albummet emmer af lyst og legesyge og virker som et projekt, Rufus mest af alt har lavet for sin egen skyld. Og efter sigende skulle det også være hans 50-års fødselsdagsgave til sig selv. Vi andre kan så nyde godt af at være inviteret med til festen, for selv om der visse steder et lidt rigeligt flødeskum på den musikalske lagkage, er det svært ikke at gå glubsk om bord i den".

"Hvor Rufus Wainwright ofte har pakket sin kraftige stemme ind i store, barokpoppede arrangementer, er udtrykket her mere nedtonet og håndspillet. Og den folkemusikalske ånd gør noget godt for canadieren ... 'Folkocracy' er et fremragende album, som nummer efter nummer åbner for et mere abstrakt rum, end man er vant til hos denne kunstner. Nogle gange lyder det som intime lejrbålssange".
