"Robert Randolph is one of the rare artists who's been able to convince a sizable audience that the pedal steel guitar has a place outside country music. This is partly due to his over-the-top skills on the instrument, but just as importantly, Randolph and his Family Band have consistently shown their ability to launch a soul shakedown party of major proportions whenever they take the stage or set up in the studio ... Got Soul is taut, joyous, heartfelt music that mixes Saturday night and Sunday morning, and the results will make you take notice any day of the week".

"Subtlety is not Randolph's strong suit. Rather he hammers licks with muscular support from his longtime group, bringing religious fervor to rock and roll, made especially potent with churchy backing vocals ... Lyrics that lean toward the pedantic (...) are less uplifting than clichéd. But they remain secondary to the pure joy and raw passion in these dozen performances".

"The sounds Randolph gets out of his instrument are astonishing-chiming chord clusters, barks and growls, subterranean bass notes and shrieking, heavy metal-style sustained leads. The Family Band is just as impressive, especially electric guitarist Johnny Gale, who often joins Randolph for extended harmonic excursions".
