"There's definitely a metal appeal here, contrary to what the elitist faction would have you believe. There's an intense energy to each track, accompanied by an epic feel from the symphonic elements, that makes the album a genuine pleasure to hear. "Selvom nogle af sangene er ganske vellykkede, Covered By Roses og den afsluttende duet med Pirner, Whole World Is Watching, er Hydra et album, der virker meget formularbaseret ... Hvor vokalmelodierne på nogle af bandets tidligere album ragede op som fyrtårne, har de ikke samme kvalitet endsige effekt på Hydra, som fremstår som et Within Temptation på halv kraft".
