"A number of things operate in favour of this new recording: it is in impeccable, modern digital sound; the full score is given without cuts; it is directed by the highly experienced conductor-pianist Constantine Orbelian, and it stars two acclaimed singers ... Turning to the singers, the two principal artists have many virtues but there are caveats ... The supporting singers are no great shakes ... While I acknowledge its many virtues, especially on the part of the two lead singers, this new release does not displace in my affections Muti's or Bonynge's second recording".

"Brownlee is an impressive Arturo, light of tone and with an easy ascent into the upper register ... However, it's Brownlee's fellow American, soprano Sarah Coburn as Elvira, who steals this recording. Her tone is exquisite in 'O rendetemi la speme', the legato perfectly judged with arching top notes that steal your breath ... Constantine Orbelian conducts hits Lithuanian forces idiomatically, the Kaunas State Choir sounding as if they have been singing Italian Romantic opera from the cradle".

"Brownlee and Coburn turn in enjoyable, technically superb performances. The tenor, his skills honed in the stratospheric realms of the earlier bel canto repertoire, is probably the most effortless Arturo on disc since Pavarotti. Every phrase is elegantly turned, the intonations is impeccable ... His 'A te, o cara' provides a masterclass in vocal control ... Coburn is similarly impressive ... and certainly deserve better than Orbelian's stolid and unimaginative support ... The orchestral playing is workmanlike, the choral singing lacking in focus and force ... In sum, although fans of the lead singers here are unlikely to be disappointed, this otherwise isn't a set to dislodge any current recommendations".
