"I've Got Money, I've Got the Power: Singles 1958-1962 is comprised of sides recorded on Syd Nathan's King/Federal labels between 1958 and '62 that preceded Brown's turn toward the harder-edged R&B and soul sound that eventually morphed into funk that would make him one of the biggest, baddest stars of all music ... The disc offers a glimpse into Brown's evolution from being a performer with obviously outsized talent, albeit one searching for his own unique sound, to the uber-confident performer who would almost single-handedly define the soul genre. On many of the CD's 28 tracks, JB sounds like a classic crooner and doo-wop singer, and he was years away from the innuendo-laden and socially conscious lyrics he would later mine, but the from-another-planet vocal power was clearly there from the start".
