"These Danish performances conducted by Marcus Creed are models of precision and lucidity; every vocal and instrumental strand is there. But it all comes across as rather cool, with neither the Liturgies nor the Rechants generating the sense of abandon and almost delirious ecstasy that the music constantly seems to be striving to express".

"To coincide with Messiaen's 100th anniversary DG presents this recording of rarely heard spiritual works of the beloved French composer. Religiosity and Catholicism have been important sources of inspiration for Olivier Messiaen throughout his artistic life and form the key aspect of the repertoire selected for this album ... Myung-Whun Chung is known as one of todays most accomplished conductors when it comes to the works of Olivier Messiaen".

"The music is truly extraordinary ... This music is also difficult, fiendishly so in the Rechants. It is no small thing, therefore, to say that, in terms of accuracy of pitch, harmony, rhythm and balance, this is the best sung performance on disc of these works, especially the Rechants. Moreover, it is all captured in marvellous surround sound. So why is it ultimately underwhelming? ... There is no such power, intensity or danger here and certainly no sense of ecstatic religious abandon".

"The early Hymne au Saint-Sacrement is a genuine rarity on disc and is in need of strong advocacy. For much of the piece it gets it, with wonderful sound and fine playing, but it goes disastrously awry in the final section which is not so much leaden footed as trapped in concrete boots".
