"This performance of Bellini's lovely opera from Sardinia has a superb Amina in Eglise Gutierrez, the finest since Callas, but the rest of the cast, and the production, is merely provincial".

"Bellini relies on fine singing to make his dramatic points, and this is an entirely serviceable cast if not really a special one ... Orchestra and chorus are both excellent".

"The 1956 black-and-white television film is hard to take with its lip-synching and busy direction, but it does boast one great asset - the dazzling Amina of the very young Anna Moffo".

"The cast has been carefully assembled ... The production is gently updated 100 years to the 1930s and set in a mountain ski resort ... Morassi's direction has the advantage of taking the piece seriously".
