"Isserlis' personal connection with Sir John Tavener was a close one, and he talks about the composer's insecurities about the music he composed after a long silence enforced by his heart attack in 2007. "As I hope this recording demonstrates, he needn't have worried - his last works are among the most powerfully beautiful he ever composed" ... Well, I would say 'job done' to all concerned, especially to the performers for creating such an extraordinary and moving account of every work here, but also to the recording engineers for capturing everything with clarity and empathy to make this a very impressive and memorable release indeed".

"Among the general public Tavener is best-known for his Song for Athene, a choral work which was performed - though not premièred - at the funeral of Diana, Princess of Wales, in 1997 ... We have here a collection of late works featuring the cello; Isserlis was the driving force behind this programme ... Isserlis' playing is throughout eloquent and expressive and the other soloists as also the players from the Philharmonia Orchestra are as dedicated as one could wish. The recordings, though made in two locations at different dates, match well and have the warmth and bloom which Tavener's music needs".

"Recording of the month: These are among Tavener's most powerful works. They are magnificently performed. Those simple points could easily be lost in the necessity of charting not just the diverse range of music and influences, but also the profoundly personal nature for Steven Isserlis of this remarkable disc. His effective arrangements of two choral pieces for an ensemble of eight cellos frame the disc ... The Philharmonia under Omer Meir Wellber are assured advocates ... A rewarding and moving disc".

"Editor's choice: Here is a disc that proves to be much more than the sum of its parts. At first sight, it appears to be something of a patchwork, with arrangements for cello ensemble of two of Tavener's choral works (the Preces and Responses and No longer mourn for me) surrounding three more substantial compositions. But in fact Steven Isserlis has understood how to draw out the vocal quality in both those pieces and adapt it superbly for the eight cellos".
