"Bob Stanley and Pete Wiggs' latest Ace curation is culled from the early 70s, when the markedly English stand-off between psychedelia, folk and jazz resulted in all manner of experimental fusion with pre-prog vibes aplenty (and lots of flutes). The trick of putting deeper cuts by better-known bands (Traffic, Yes, Argent, Mott The Hoople's gorgeous "Waterlow") next to Discogs nosebleeds again pays off - newcomers should try the shuffling breakbeats of Shape Of The Rain or Skin Alley, Mandy More's sweetly naive "Come With Me To Jesus" or ex-Spooky Tooth Andrew Leigh's tender "Windy baker Street". Gently funky, always melodious and in stark contrast (or reaction) to the societal upheaval going on around them, this is a groovy scene that's been covered before (...), but rarely with such smarts".
