"One Step Behind sees Garcia Peoples continuing their rapid, curious evolution. That the band can take such a huge leap from their previous material in such a short period of time points to an even more radical exploration of what's to come".

"A band doesn't always exceed by expanding. No musician's guide would suggest that, cruising early in its career, a band should bring in a parent and write a half-hour odyssey. Then follow it up with a new vocalist losing himself in hurt. Garcia Peoples has never had much interest in being normal, and One Step Behind benefits greatly from that distinctiveness".

"New Jersey rockers' fresh-minted productivity sends them outwards and upwards ... 'Cosmic Cash' and 'Natural Facts' [were] respectively chilled and feisty versions of their twin-guitar choogle, crossing West Coast acid rock with Southern boogie. 'One Step Beyond' shifts the goalposts, comprising a 32-minute title track and the eight-minute 'Heart And Soul', an elegant comedown in the mould of [The Band's] 'Music From Big Pink'. Beforehand, the main event ebbs and flows through myriad scenes, hovering between a jam and a plan. An opening stretch of floating saxophone and locked-groove guitars surrenders to space-rock drama, then a breezy song/melody that segues into a simmering jam, bridged by mushrooming guitars to a sax-tooting coda that blows off whatever steam is left in the engine".
