"The 25th anniversary reissue of this warmly sentimental "paean to California", with three bonuses and a disc of instrumental backing tracks (...) finds a multitracked Wilson harmonising with himself and applying the robust, cheery, frat-house holler he developed in middle-age to an exquisite set of Parks compositions. The rolling "San Francisco" is the closest the album ever gets to pop-rock as we know it, and the bass harmonica in "My Jeanine" nods fondly to "Pet Sounds" ... The luscious title song, with its daredevil harmonies, is emblematic of Parks' miraculous arranging skills: how can something so sumptuous also be so subtle?".
