"Recording of the week: Kaufmann thrives under the scrutiny of the camera ... He has a formidable antagonist in the French baritone Marco Vratogna, whose apparent honesty is dressed up as a dysfunctional bluntness that borders on the psychopathic ... Agresta's radiant Desdemona is no ingénue but a mature and assured First Lady ... The Covent Garden chorus sing and act out of their boots ... and Antonio Pappano ensures that the orchestra anticipates every nuance from Kaufmann in particular".

"Otello is played by Aleksandrs Antonenko, who is tremendous in all respects. His Desdemona is the lovely Marina Poplavskaya ... an expert in suffering. Carlos Àlvarez's Iago and Stephen Costello's Cassio are both nothing short of outstanding ... To my mind this is the DVD Otello to go for".

"The performance itself is outstanding ... Elijah Moshinsky's production ig highly traditional and handsomely designed ... This was also probably the best cast available for the opera at that time".

"An unmissable 1978 Met Otello with superb principals: Vickers (Otello) and Scotto (Desdemona) are spellbinding, and the underrated Cornell MacNeil is a chillingly "normal" villain".

Anbefalet".

"This disc is a record of perhaps the most eagerly awaited of operatic appearances for many years: Jonas Kaufmann making his role debut as Verdi's Otello. Expectations were high and also anxious, since Kaufmann had been suffering form acute vocal problems ... Though he is in fine voice, he does not come across as the wounded animal that the greatest Otellos - Jon Vickers, Mario del Monaco - so impressively were ... It would have helped if Keith Warner's production had been more alert to the lights and shades in the drama ... excitingly conducted by Antonio Pappano ... I found that Marco Vratogna as Iago ... was the most powerful presence".

"Vurdering: IRR outstanding" - "There are many excellent filmed performances of Otello out there ... but this one is up there with the best. It stars young Latvian tenor Aleksandrs Antonenko as the Morr and he is terrific, a true heir to Domingo's crown ... Poplavskaya's Desdemona is charming, both adorable and adored ... The stylishly sung, dark Iago of Carlos Alvarez is a real asset ... Langridge's production has a fortress abstractly presented ... Muti conducts a pasisonate, driven account ... A vivid, outstanding performance in every way".

"Vurdering: Gramophone recommends" - "A thrilling performance that's much helped by the imaginative filming ... As much again could now be written about Domingo's singing, and Te Kanawa's, and about Solti's conducting, but a video demands attention to the visual. Suffice to say that you can have the highest expectation and not be disappointed".

"Jon Vickers was, and remains, the greatest Peter Grimes and Otello I ever saw onstage. Both of these characters are tormented ... Vickers appears as if he's ripping his own heart out ... Renata Scotto interprets Desdemona as no other singer ... a woman of strength who can't win ... Levine, at his most potent and understanding ... Bless the Met for finally opening its archives ... This may be the only video Otello you'll ever need. It's the one that captures the pity and sadness best".

"The main strength of the performance is the taut conducting of Myung-Whun Chung, who barely lets the tensions drop for a second ... Kunde, a genuine tenor rather than baritonal Otello, is strong and forthright throughout ... The orchestra of the Teatro La Fenice know their Verdi and play with élan".

"Despite ... an illness-plagued season for the superstar German tenor [Kaufmann] ... he's on confident form. Indeed, the voice is in very good condition, traversing the role with plenty of his trademark burnished tone, honeyed pianissimos and no signs of tiredness. Vocally it's a mightily impressive achievement. But almost too much so: I miss the element of wildness ... Warner directs principals and chorus well but plumps for a semi-abstract modernism that is short of atmosphere ... Though: Antonio Pappano's fiery and detailed conducting, the fine orchestral playing and an excellent supporting cast ... The production isn't what it might be but this is still a film well worth exploring".
