"Tomato Records tapped Jack Clement to produce this set, but the results of his work are mixed. The best tracks here are the ones in which Clement showed a bit of restraint, while others feature strings, flutes, harpsichords, and other touches that might have been trippy ideas at the time, but sounded embarrassingly dated even a few years later".

"This, his second album, was released in 1969 and, like many of his other long-players, is a fairly deceptive offering on first listen. It may seem like a a bedraggled, slightly weary performance but, if you pay attention, Van Zandt's thoughts are magnificent, important and majestic, taking you on a tour of the human condition".
