"The ex-Pulp frontman and pianist check in at Hollywood's infamous Chateau Marmont for this beautifully bittersweet song cycle ... There's less glitz than strange half-lives lived between bouts of room service. Cocker and Gonzales aren't so mesmerised by Chateau lore (John Belushi overdosing, etc) as they are by the semi-famous marinating in glamorous desperation, the old-school Hollywood lifers ordering "ice cream as main course"".

"Hvor blev [Jarvis Cocker] af? Her blev han af. På Hjerteknas Hotel, nu i fællesskab med den canadiske pianist m.m. Chilly Gonzales om albummet Room 29. Her får Cocker lov til at udbrede sine klassiske fortælleevner i en arkaisk opsætning - typisk soloklaver, af og til kammerorkester, kortvarigt fuldt orkestralt udtræk. Han har en diminutiv sangstemme, men en fabelagtigt lavbritisk fraseringskunst, betragtelige skuespillerevner og et sæt sublime tekster ... Room 29 er en harsk, sorthumoristisk fortælling med nutidens afkobling fra den egentlige virkelighed som tematisk understrøm. Med virkelige og imaginære menneskeskæbner som en mørkt glimtende guirlande gennem albummet ... Hvis jeg havde kunnet vælge, så havde jeg fået et album i en lidt mere eventyrlysten iscenesættelse. Måske lidt soundscapes, en mere radiodramatisk iscenesættelse omkring numrene. Men måske er det konservatismen i musikken, som har givet Cocker mod på at oplade sin røst igen. Hvilket er alt rigeligt".
