"Another essential piece of folk music from Maddy Prior and Hannah James & Giles Lewin. Maddy Prior just keeps on getting better with age and long may that continue".

"The trio span three musical generations, and are all involved with multiple projects, but have found time to capture their unique chemistry again with "Shotwinger", a collection created thematically around the place of wildlife in folk mythology. Insightful sleevenotes explain the source material of the traditional songs and composition of the originals, providing an immersive accompaniment to the organic live feel of the vocal and instrumental performances. Prior's extensive vocal range blends smoothly with Lewis and James in the intricate harmonies woven around the crafted melody lines of "Austringer" and odd metre of "Murmuration", and on teh resonant a cappella arrangements of "Jenny Wren" and "The Owl"".

"Throughout her 50-year-plus career, Maddy Prior has always relished furthering her exploration of traditional music, invariably in fresh and interesting ways ... It's an album intelligently themed around 'the wild field', ostensibly examining the place of birds and hares in folk mythology ... Although norminally spearheaded by Maddy, the contributions of her multi-skilled partners are fresh and intensely empathic. Hannah's youthful vocal timbre, creative accordeon playing and vital clog-percussion team up with Giles' stringed virtuosity, sturdy singing and abundant musical flair to provide the essential foil for Maddy's commanding presence".
