"Mime synges med overskud i det fedeste kostume: en arrig flue af en giftiggrøn lille rummand med hår på ryggen og spasmodisk-atletiske bevægelser. Virkelig et syn for nordiske guder! ... Måske er den farvestærke og flotte produktion ikke ligefrem det mest dybdeborende bud på en Ring, man kan mindes ... men den er fascinerende at kigge på ... Og igen er dirigent Haenchen mand for det stringente i gennemspilningen".

"Not only does Barenboim have complete control of the shape of Wagner's enormous acts, but there are enormous numbers of details, often witty and pertinent, and immense climaxes ...[Stensvold] almost steals the show with his lofty grandeur barely concealing anxiety and exhaustion ... Stemme is superb, flawless".

"Staged on a series of metallic platforms surrounding the orchestra ... The feeling grows, that this must have worked better live ... Haenchen, conducting the Rotterdam orchestra now, remains authetically brisk. But in what should be the Ring's most exuberant quadrant, the effect is curiously uninvolving".

"Stensvold (Wanderer) sings with perfectly centred tone, terrific staying power and command of broad legato phrases ... Surprisingly, though, it's Alberich here who possesses the more beautiful voice: baritone Johannes Martin Kranzle, combining effortless vocalism with chilling intensity of utterance - and he's also a born actor ... The video direction adopts a wonderfully cinematic approach".

"Barenboim provides a masterclass in Wagner interpretation that need fear no comparison with the greatest of his persecursors".

"This remains highly recommended, a refreshing antidote to leaden Teutonic representations".

"Siegfried confirms the outstanding musical qualities of Juha Uusitalo's Wotan, and introduces a major new talent in the Canadian tenor Lance Ryan ... On purely musical grounds, then - with excellent orchestral playing and decent sound to match - this is an account whose vocal strengths tend to override its more questionable interpretative aspects".
