"Boldly, with no little imagination, Younger has created a collection of songs around her instrument and her playing that fuses genres like jazz, soul and hip-hop. She has taken the conventional rule book and ripped it to shreds and deserves nothing but praise for that. In doing so, Brandee Younger has created the perfect soundtrack for the season".

"Certainly, she does not have much competition playing an instrument more often associated with classical music, but the fact remains, like Shabaka Hutchings, her label mate, she is one of the most respected artists in Black music today. While it may be tempting to compare her to the other famous female of the instrument, Alice Coltrane, Younger is entirely different although both share an experimental approach".

"With Somewhere Different, Brandee Younger makes her much-deserved major-label debut as a leader. Hardly anyone does what she does. Not only is her music an exalted meeting place for European classical and African-American musical forms, but she is one of the few who can, as a practitioner, further the legacy of singular composers like Alice Coltrane and Dorothy Ashby. No small responsibility".
