"Caesar's got nothing to say about himself, his family, or his savior that isn't on a greeting card. And he shows no interest in the melodrama that can elevate R&B songs about love and its complications into the sublime, the singular. Whatever story he aims to tell about faith, it's not in the music".

"Med dette album inviterer Caesar os til en intim, 51 minutters kirkelig ceremoni, der kan få selv en ateist til kortvarigt at føle sig religiøs ... Det er få kunstnere, der giver mig lyst til at tage i kirke, men med Son of Spergy må Daniel Caesar godt tage mig med i kirke - ikke kun søndag, men alle ugens dage.
