"The album is an interesting dichotomy, at once intimate as if Gardot is singing to you in a small club, yet also widescreen, framing her hushed vocals in sweeping orchestrations that reinforce the romantic drama at play in the songs. ... From beginning to end, Gardot's Sunset in the Blue holds you in its deeply rapturous glow".

"What a pick-me-up this album is. Released as the days darken, literally and metaphorically, it's a real joy - a transport of delight to dappled squares in Paris or Lisbon, or a street party in Rio. What a pick-me-up this album is. Released as the days darken, literally and metaphorically, it's a real joy - a transport of delight to dappled squares in Paris or Lisbon, or a street party in Rio. Sunset in the Blue is billed as "an orchestral celebration of Melody Gardot's jazz roots" but the abiding sound that remains in the mind's ear after the album's finished is that of a jazz guitar, played with a bossa nova rhythm".

"On Sunset in the Blue, Gardot is in torrid torch-song mode with nine of her most swoonsome performances detailing passion and desire cushioned by the strings of the Royal Philharmonic ... Individually, nothing here is less than accomplished - with From Paris with Love played by its virtual global orchestra particularly lovely - and Gardot remains a singular talent who never makes the same album twice. But the uniformity of mood here lessens the impact; it's as if every ballad is auditioning for the romantic climax of a Richard Curtis film. A little more swing and a little less smooch next time, please".

"Where Currency of Man was all funk rhythm and social consciousness, Sunset is all swoonsome escapism. It turns out that this was what the lockdown world wanted and Sunset was a pop-chart hit around Europe last autumn. If The Look of Love is your favourite Diana Krall album, then Gardot, assisted by producer Larry Klein and arranger Vince Mendoza, is travelling down the same sun-dappled street here. The strings of the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra feather-bed nine of the ballads and torch songs. But should you swap your copy for the de luxe version? ... The mildly annoying news is that the five extra tracks are worth having - at least if you felt the lushly upholstered sound on the 13 original tracks needed more contrast or variety. What's added here are low-key performances with Gardot's voice - that mix of seduction and vulnerability - accompanied by acoustic bass, brushed snare and discreet electric guitar ... Gardot calls these [added songs and] versions "vulnerable and fragile, unapologetic and unvarnished"; I'd say they were just about right".

"Gardots flair for bossanova med tropiskbrasilianske følelser og percussion flyder blødt igennem hele 'Sunset in the Blue' (...) Gardot siger, albummet blev anderledes end ventet, fordi musikerne - blandt andet The Royal Philharmonic Orchestra - måtte optages på distance ... Solen skinner blåt, corona-ensomt i standards som Johnny Mercers 'Moon River', og violinerne flyder uendeligt smukt i 'Ave Maria', hvor hun ønsker at 'drink to life as if there is no end'".

"Of all the inspiring messages sent out by musicians during the pandemic, Melody Gardot's touching video collaboration with players and well-wishers from around the world, "From Paris With Love," struck home, especially the line,"Maybe one day, I'll see you soon." Gardot's quietly passionate, finely wrought new album, Sunset In The Blue, includes that timely song while lingering in its register of loss, hope and moody desire, which we all know so well these day".
