"A few more rockers on the order of the Armstrong co-write "Strangers & Thieves" would have raised the overall temperature, but each of these 14 tracks is an exquisitely constructed gem. How much is due to Williams is unclear, but like her work, these songs never feel rushed or lackadaisical. Only two break the four-minute mark, packing words and hooks into a compact format ripe for radio play especially on the Americana format that has largely ignored Malin so far. Hopefully that changes with this higher profile project. If it does, his newfound audience has a treasure trove of other exciting Malin catalog items to discover".

"It's a nice dose of rock & roll, but the heart of Sunset Kids lies at twilight, when the day is done, and there are some lingering regrets, but still a glimmer of hope. That bittersweet undercurrent is what lifts this album into the ranks of one of Malin's best records".

"Jesse Malin had a shit year in 2018. His father, former guitarist, and producer all died. So his new album Sunset Kids, his first in four years, could have been a major bummer. Instead, it's a celebration of survival that finds the New York City hardcore troubadour reflecting on life's precious and fleeting moments".
