"I admire every piece of this band and every recording, and I find the combination of voices often daring and thrilling. With so much brilliance on the table (and, well, maybe some extra stuff that is thrilling or honest but not sublime), the challenge may now be to direct the music toward a more focused identity. If anyone is up to that challenge, it is Ryan Keberle, whose music seems to grow each year in depth and daring".

"Is it really protest music if the dominant emotion within the songs is hope? That's one of the questions raised by the sometimes reflective, sometimes questioning, always uplifting music on The Hope I Hold, the third album by trombonist Ryan Keberle and his socially aware band Catharsis ... The hope I hold is that Keberle and Catharsis will make more such optimistic and provocative music".

"Trombone, guitar and voice are a scarce combo in jazz, which is why this version of Ryan Keberle's unit, Catharsis, often wanders into interludes of a preeminently striking character ... While the nine originals here are attentive to pacing, dynamics and timbre, the thematic atmosphere is thin and powdery; they don't adhere easily in emotional memory. The exception is "Zamba De Lozano," an evocative Portuguese song sung with overdubs, but still with a plush Brazilian intimacy".
