"New collection The Rough Guide to Holy Blues is a great representation of the most familiar of gospel/blues singers like Reverend Gary Davis and Blind Willie Johnson to unknowns like Mother McCollum ... This release is a great entry into the social and musical complexities of one of America's oldest folk forms".

"A companion volume to their 2016 release "Gospel Blues", this is a similar sterling collection from the World Music Network label. "Holy Blues" again turns the spotlight on the many pre-war bluesmen who occasionally recorded gospel music. Whether this was at the insistence of the record company in an attempt to sell to a wider audience, or by the artists' own religious beliefs, is open to speculation, but, whatever the reason, listening to these 25 tracks you are left in no doubt that the bluesmen were just as capable at performing gospel music at the highest level as were the purely dedicated gospel artists. What makes many of these recordings stand out is the guitar ability of the bluesmen".
